While Mother's Day for a lot of sons means remembering to buy a
card and a bunch of flowers, for Ashton Kutcher it involved redecorating the
entire house.
The actor decided to remodel his childhood home in Homestead, Iowa
as a special surprise for his mom Diane.
'It's my way of saying thank you to my mom,' the 37-year-old new
father said, calling it his 'lifelong dream'.
'My mom has been like the greatest influence in my life, and
anything I can do to say thank you is the right thing to do.'
As he lives
in Beverly Hills and is also father to a new seven-month-old baby, the actor
was able to remodel the house remotely - using the home-remodeling app Houzz to
plan the new design.
The renovations were put up on the Houzz website as
part of an online series.
'It's a house I helped build with my stepdad [Mark] when I was 13
but these days we've all moved out and kind of outgrown the space,' explained
Kutcher, who has also invested in houzz.
'I just had a daughter [Wyatt], my sister just had a new
son.
'And I want to make it fit for the next generation.
'They're
going to be living with grandkids running around.'
Kutcher has remodelled one of the bedrooms to fit bunkbeds, which
he says will be able to be used when his mother's grandchildren come to
stay.
He also dramatically revamped the American-style living room,
which used to have recliners, John Wayne memorabilia and Chicago Bears
merchandise. It is now lighter, modern and minimalist, with a large wide screen
television, modern fire and corner sofa.
The renovation and home improvement took 27 days to install all
the elements the actor wanted.
'We're tearing the entire house apart so if my mom doesn't like
it, somebody's in big trouble,' Kutcher - who was born Christopher - said
pointing to himself.
Kutcher helped build the house when he was 13-years-old with his
stepfather, Steve, who played a big role in the remodeling process.
He told E! 'The
one thing that has eternally bonded my stepdad and I is that my stepdad loves
my mom as much as I do.
'When you're the oldest son, and your parents have gone through a
divorce, you're always mistrustful of any other guy. But Mark stepped in and a
lot of ways was there for me in ways my dad couldn't be there for me. I'm one
of those people in this world who's lucky enough to have two dads. I'm just a
blessed person to have that much love in my life.'
She told People.com 'I went to visit Ashton and the new baby and they decided they needed me to
stay out there for a little while to help,' his mom explains. 'And I come, and
this is what I find. It does mean a lot to me, it's beautiful.' see more photos below...
