Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has announced his resignation after mass protests in the wake of a nightclub fire that killed more than 30 people last week.

"It is unbelievable that this moment has come. I am 50 years old. I am delighted and grateful to the almighty God, who is incomparable, the omnipotent and magnificent God. If I have a thousand tongues it is not enough to express my gratitude. I just want to say Thank You God. I also want to say thanks to my parents, who laboured in my upbringing, though my mother is late.

I believe she is looking down from heaven with joy and blessings for my future. I am grateful for my dad too, who through all hardship has the forbearance of hope and wisdom of a father. I want to say thanks to the thousands of people who have befriended me in joyful and difficult circumstances, too numerous to mention here, but I am joyful because of the unavoidable contributions in my life. Half a century is a gift, everyday will always be a precious bonus. I say THANK YOU JESUS, MY SAVIOUR AND MY LORD".

Lagos fire - Residents count losses

No fewer‎ than 300 rooms were burnt to ashes in a fire outbreak at Coast Street, Ebute Meta of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the fire incident started a few minutes past 5pm on Tuesday.

40 fear dead in Plane crash in South Sudan

An Anti novo 12 cargo plane carrying 5 Russian crew and 7 passengers crash-landed near South Sudan’s Juba International airport, very close to White Nile River this morning. South Sudan's aviation authorities say two people including a child survived the crash. A woman and her seven children are said to have perished in the crash. The plane was heading to Paloich in the Upper Nile region when it crashed. Rescue work is ongoing at the site of the crash...

Al-Shabaab militants attack Somali hotel, kill 13

At least 13 people were killed Sunday as Al-Shabaab militants stormed a hotel in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia, police and witnesses said.

Police officer Mohamed Hassan told Xinhua that a car bomb hit the gate of the Sahafi hotel and then several gunmen stormed in.

“They entered the hotel exchanging heavy gunfire with the security, but finally Somali security forces managed to end the attack. The situation now is under our control,” he said
