What
is vomiting?
All dogs vomit from
time to time and usually the cause is trivial, possibly associated with normal
scavenging behaviour with the dog recovering quickly. However in some cases,
the cause of the vomiting can be more serious or even life-threatening. Owners
should be particularly concerned if their dog's vomiting is severe, ongoing or
drawn out.
Symptoms
Symptoms include
ejection of material from a dog's mouth and retching.
What causes vomiting?
There are numerous
causes of vomiting including the ingestion of foreign objects (rubber toys,
stones etc), parasite infestations, motion sickness, dietary problems,
metabolic diseases (liver or kidney disease etc), toxins and gastrointestinal
infections.
Treatment
It's advisable to
withhold food after a dog vomits for up to 12 hours and gradually reintroduce a
bland food in small portions. The dog should also be given small amounts of
water regularly to ensure adequate hydration. If vomiting persists, contact
your vet who will be able to advise on the appropriate investigation and
treatment.
