STORM-battered Britain
work up to scenes of chaos today after the nation suffered a night of 100mph
gales and weather experts warn there's more to come.
Commuters
were facing problems this morning on road and rail after Chiltern Railways
suspended many services when a tree fell on the line near Amersham.
Further
north Cheshire Police said the high winds had caused "chaos on the
roads" while the Dartford Crossing on the M25 has been closed because of
potentially deadly crosswinds.
Meanwhile,
a motorcyclist was seriously injured after colliding with a tree that had been
blown down in Oxfordshire and heavy rain is believed to have loosened soil in
Cornwall causing an ancient mineshaft to open, leaving a hole 15 metres
deep.
Winds
in Snowdonia peaked just short of 100mph.
The
UK is currently covered in yellow weather warnings by the Met Office with the
public urged to be aware of the threat of severe conditions.
Countless
homes and businesses were hit by the brutal storms.
A
couple in Worsley, Greater Manchester, had a lucky escape when a 20 foot tree
smashed into the front of their house just after midnight.
Firefighters
spent three hours using a chainsaw to break the tree down and make the house
safe.
Simon
Cording, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said:
"The tree had landed on the front of the house, causing damage to the
house and a car next door. The couple inside luckily got out safely.
"However,
they were due to go on a family holiday today and sadly won't be able to as a
result of the damage. They had a lucky escape - it could have been much
worse."
Meanwhile,
in London a street was also cordoned off in the Canary Wharf business district
amid fears huge solar panels on top of the JP Morgan skyscraper could blow off
the roof.
Met
Office experts were warning people the dangerously high winds are due to
continue for much of the day.
Forecaster
Kirk Waite said: "It's going to stay a pretty windy day.
"There
could potentially be some quite difficult conditions throughout the course of
the morning for those getting up and heading out to work.
"The
north west of the country is going to see some quite blustery showers moving in
- it's probably going to see the strongest winds today."
